“Kinds Of Boils And Skin Abscesses”

Put simply a boils is a local infection of the skin that has become reddened, tender, or sensitive. After some time has passed this reddened and sensitive area gets firmer, it can feel hard and bothersome as the area is tender and can sometimes be painful or agitating when touched.

At this point your body rallies its immune system and sends the white blood cells antibodies to combat the skin infection. The boils center will then soften as it fills up with white blood cells and bacteria which form the boils white or lighter head and this fluid is usually referred to as pus.  Doctors refer to the condition of boils as a “Skin Abscess”.  Extreme cases of skin abscesses can be by anti-biotic medicine, or in some cases where boils get overly large a doctor or surgeon will surgically open the boil so it can drain and be cleared from the skin.

Boils generally fall into two categories:

Furuncle:  Is a boil that is caused when a hair follicle gets infected with Staph bacteria which causes a skin abscess or boil.

Carbuncle: When more than one hair follicle is infected with Staph Bacteria you can get outbreaks of multiple skin abscesses or boils. Some larger boils are actually Carbuncles can appear as multiple boils or as one large red and tender skin abscess. Sometimes a hardened lump that you feel over an area of your body can be a result of a Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteria infection and result in a Carbuncle.

There are other categories of Skin Abscesses:

Acne: Can be a type of skin abscess when a pour or hair follicle becomes clogged or infected.  However more commonly referred to a boil or skin condition would be Cystic Acne.

Cystic Acne:  This kind of pimple affects slightly deeper tissue of the skin, unlike normal acne which takes place on the top surface of the skin which any teenager can tell you about.

Generally a boil is a slightly more severe condition then common acne however they are very similar and are both skin abscesses.

Other boil abscesses:

Pilonidal Cyst: Also a hair follicle infection however a Pilonidal Cyst forms in the buttocks region of the body. Direct pressure caused by laying down or sitting down can cause irritation which upsets the infected hair follicle and becomes a firm and painful boil that can make contact with that area very painful. Sometimes can be caused after over-elongated periods of lying down or sitting during the time a hair follicle gets infected with bacteria.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa:  These are boils which commonly spring up around the groin or form up under the arm pit areas. The cause for this typically is an inflammation of sweat glands located in those regions of the body. Antibiotics are having a harder time treating this kind of boil or abscess skin infection on its own and usually requires a hospital medical procedure that involves removing the troublesome sweat glands which are causing the boil.

Those are the types of boils and skin abscesses normal people like you and me can get from time to time and do not worry as they are very treatable. And are not causes for unnecessary alarm. Keep the area clean, let the boil mature and drain, and treat the area with Neosporin. Check out the home page for more treatment methods.
